Meet Pluma, your new favorite summer cardi with a free pattern!

Updated: Nov 14, 2020

Meet Pluma, your new favorite summer cardi! The Pluma Summer Cardi uses soft worsted weight yarn and a comfy G-6 hook to construct a light piece for the summer. The name Pluma was inspired by the color of the yarn I used, resulting in my use of a derivative of the word plum. The focus of this design is on the puffy Turkish stitch used to make texture and also teach anyone who wishes to make it a new skill! The rest of the panels use a simple treble to build height. The Turkish stitch is a variation of Turkish Stitch #3 found on ellej.org. The term Turkish stitch is used to describe stitch patterns that caused overlapping, and I'm sure this will be your new favorite! Let's get into it!

Pluma Summer Cardi Pattern

Sizes XS (S, M, L, XL)

Yarn: 3 (4, 5, 6, 7) skeins of Main Street Shiny and Soft Yarn (334 yds/skein)

Hook: G-6 (4.25 mm)

Gauge: 16 sts, 8 rows of main pattern (Turkish stitch) = 4” (10 cm)

Alternate Gauge: 16 sts, 5.5 rows of treble crochet = 4" (10 cm)

Notes:

  • Gauge, gauge, gauge! I could have a lecture on how important it is! Be sure to check your gauge to ensure that the dimensions for your top are ideal.

  • Ch 2, ch 3, and ch 4 do not count as stitches. To avoid troublesome seaming with the latter two, I recommend using the method of a no turning-chain stitch from Nicki’s Homemade Crafts (https://www.nickishomemadecrafts.com/alternative-turning-chain/).

  • This pattern uses a Turkish stitch (term used to describe stitching that results in overlapping posts with puffs or other stitches), and the puff stitch 2 together may be confusing. A photo tutorial is added due to this. The stitch pattern for this summer cardi is an version of Turkish Stitch #3 from ellej.org (https://ellej.org/en/turst-3/).

  • I didn’t use Main Street Shiny and Soft for this, but it’s a recommended yarn due to its close gauge and texture properties.

  • For Row 4, chains are counted as stitches when being skipped.

Special Stitches:

Puff stitch: Yarn over, insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over, pull yarn through stitch, (yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over again, pull yarn through stitch) twice, yarn over, pull through all loops on hook, chain 1. When you do this, there should be seven (7) loops on your hook before you yarn over the remaining loops.

Puff 2 Together (puff2tog):

After doing a puff stitch in the first ch-1 space, chain 2 (includes the ch 1 in the directions for the puff st).

In the same ch-1 space, pull up another seven (7) loops, but don't pull through them yet.

Yarn over. Insert the hook into the next ch-1 space, and pull up eight (8) loops. You should have fifteen (15) loops on the hook now.

Pull the yarn through all fifteen (15) loops. Ch 2. Your double crochet cluster should have a scrunched effect to it now, like grapes. Progress with the stitch across the row before the final puff stitch at the end.

Abbreviations:

Ch - chain

Dc - double crochet

Seaming:

Using any method you'd like, seam the front panels to the top of the back panel either in the direction shown in the diagram or starting at the edges of the panels going in. Use the following list for seaming the sides accordingly:

If beginning to seam the sides from 1st row up panel:

XS: Stop at row 15

S: Row 16

M: 16

L: 17

XL: 17

After seaming:

Sleeves: Attach yarn on sleeve, single crochet around. There should be 1 sc in each single crochet, 1 sc in each ch-2, 1 sc in each dc, 2 single crochets in each treble, and 3 in ch-4 (or equivalent stitch).

Inside Lining (edges of front panel where cardi opens up): Attach yarn to on of the flaps leading inside the cardigan (not the outside), and single crochet using the same amount of singles in each kind of stitch as with the sleeves.

Measurement diagram (in inches) by size in order of XS - S - M - L - XL
