Free Crochet Pattern: The Lura Petal Cardigan!

It's finally here! Introducing the Lura Petal Cardigan! This soft, bulky cardigan is what will be your favorite to wear to school, work, or even just at home to stay cozy!

As you may already know, all of my designs have a focal point, and this design features a puffy petal stitch pattern that you will enjoy from front to back. The petals line the front panels and the bottom of the back to bring a texture you’ll enjoy for the entire colder season.

The name was given due to the look of the yarn I used for this design. The beautiful C380 color way of Koigu Wool Designs worsted-weight Chelsea yarn gives a marbled effect that reminded me a bit of squid ink! In Galician, one of the languages spoken in an autonomous region of Spain, lura means squid.

Now, onto the pattern!

Lura Petal Cardigan Pattern

Sizes S (M, L, XL)

Yarn (Approximations): 10 (11, 12, 13) skeins of Koigu Chelsea Yarn in C380 (125 yds/hank)

Hook: I-9 (5.50 mm)

Gauge: 14 sts, 8 rows dc = 4” (10 cm)

Notes:

  • Gauge, gauge, gauge! I could have a lecture on how important it is! Be sure to check your gauge to ensure that the dimensions for your top are ideal.

  • Ch 1 and ch 3 do not count as stitches. To avoid troublesome seaming with the latter, I recommend using the no-turning-chain stitch from Nicki’s Homemade Crafts.

  • This pattern includes a stitch diagram to help you visualize the petal stitch of the pattern. The stitch pattern is written up in the directions.

  • Skipped chains will not be accounted for in the instructions.

  • Though Koigu Chelsea is a worsted weight yarn, it’s thicker and would be referred to as aran weight. If you wish, you may choose a yarn that’s a heavier worsted weight or just adjust your hook size to meet the gauge.

  • The first row of each panel is all single crochet. You may choose to use foundation single crochet instead of the traditional chain method.

Special Stitches:

Puff stitch: Yarn over, insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over, pull yarn through stitch, (yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over again, pull yarn through stitch) four times, yarn over, pull through all loops except the last one closest to your fingers, yarn over, and chain 1. When you do this, there should be nine (9) loops on your hook Before you yarn over the eight (8) loops and do the rest of the stitch.

Abbreviations:

Blo - back loops only

Ch - chain

Dc - double crochet

Dc2tog - double crochet two (stitches) together

Hdc - half double crochet

Sc - single crochet

Sk - skip

Sp - space

St(s) - stitch(es)

Seaming:

Seam using any method you'd like from bottom of panels upward when doing the sides. Leave two inches below the start of the seam.

Seam side up to:

S: Row 32

M: Row 30

L: Row 30

XL: Row 32

When seaming the shoulders, just seam from the edge of both panels (front and back) towards the middle like in the diagram below.

Sleeves (do for both sides):

The format for the sleeves is (S, M, L, XL) for the stitch counts and S (M, L, XL) for the round counts.

Attach yarn at underarm.

Round 1: Ch 1, sc 2 in each dc and ch-3 from working vertically (or equivalent turning stitch) around. (52, 60, 68, 68 sc)

Round 2: Ch 2, dc in each sc around. (52, 60, 68, 68 dc)

Rounds 3-26 (26, 28, 28): Ch 2, dc in each st around. (52, 60, 68, 68 dc)

Round 27 (27, 29, 29): Ch 2, dc2tog around. (26, 30, 34, 34 dc)

Fasten off and leave a tail for seaming a cuff on each sleeve.

Sleeve Cuffs (Make two):

The format for the sleeve cuffs is (S, M, L, XL) for the stitch counts and S (M, L, XL) for the round counts.

Ch 9.

Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc across. (7 hdc)

Rows 2-13 (15, 17, 17): Ch 2, turn, hdc in blo across.

Do not chain.

Slip stitch the next row to the chain row and fasten off.

Use tail from sleeve to seam cuff around. There should be 2 dc of the sleeve to correspond to each row of the cuff. Therefore, seam two double crochets to each cuff.
